How to find micro influencers: a step-by-step method with a real example
· Nolyn research team
Micro influencers are easy to find and hard to choose. Search results are full of brand pages, apps, shops and accounts that stopped posting a year ago, and follower counts say little about who still watches. This guide gives a method that works with free tools, then shows it on a real search we ran on nolyn.ai on October 21, 2026 for a US houseplant care brand, with every figure recomputed from the raw data. We do not publish the creators' handles: the point is the method and the numbers, not a list to copy.
How do you find micro influencers?
Search the platform for the words your customers use (not your brand name), keep accounts with 10,000–100,000 followers, then open each one and check four things: it posted in the last 30 days, the account country fits your market, the content is about your topic, and its median engagement per video is healthy. In our real search on 2026-10-21, 2 TikTok keyword searches returned 40 accounts, 9 were in the 10K–100K range, and only 2 were active US creators on topic; the smallest of them had the best engagement (7.69% of views).
What counts as a micro influencer
There is no official cut-off. Most brands and agencies call accounts with 10,000 to 100,000 followers micro influencers, under 10,000 nano and over 100,000 macro, and we use 10K–100K throughout this guide.
Brands look for them because they usually charge less than large accounts, talk to a narrow niche, and are more likely to reply to a small brand. The catch is that followers are a weak signal of reach: in the example below, the creator with the most followers had the lowest engagement and was not in the target country.
A real search: US micro influencers for houseplant care products
The brief: houseplant care products (plant food, potting mix, grow lights) for the US, creators with 10,000–100,000 followers who post plant care tips, tutorials and honest reviews, on TikTok and Instagram. We ran it with Nolyn's influencer search on October 21, 2026 (17:08–17:12 UTC), then asked a follow-up to pull each shortlisted account's recent posts. The whole task used 80 credits (38 for data, 42 for AI) and under 5 minutes of run time.
On TikTok, two keyword searches ("houseplant" and "plant care tips") returned 20 accounts each. 7 had more than 100,000 followers, 24 had fewer than 10,000 and 9 were in range. Opening those 9 showed what search results are really made of:
| What the account turned out to be | Accounts |
|---|---|
| Plant-identification or AI app accounts, not creators | 2 |
| Dormant: last videos in December 2022 and August 2025 | 2 |
| Outside the US: one registered in Romania, one whose bio points to another market | 2 |
| Not opened in this run | 1 |
| Active US creators posting plant care (Creators A and C below) | 2 |
The 9 TikTok accounts with 10,000–100,000 followers from 40 search results, 2026-10-21. Country is the platform-reported account country.
What the recent posts showed
Follower counts in the search results looked similar; the posts did not. For each account we took its latest videos (15–30) and computed, per video, the engagement rate by views, (likes + comments + shares) ÷ views, and by followers, then the median. On Instagram, where views are not returned for photos, we used likes + comments per post ÷ followers.
Creator A, the smallest TikTok account, was the only one that was US-registered, posting weekly and squarely about houseplants, and it had by far the highest engagement: 7.69% of views and 11 videos in the last 30 days, mostly rare-plant hauls, potting-mix recipes and care routines. Its reach is modest (median 1,450 views; 1 of 29 videos passed 10,000). Creator D had the most followers and the highest median views but the lowest engagement and is registered in Romania, so it failed the brief. Creator B has the strongest sponsorship history (6 of its 15 latest videos asked viewers to comment a keyword for a discount on grow lights, a plant-care app or propagation balls) but had not posted for 14 months.
On Instagram, the single "houseplant" search returned 30 accounts, mostly brands, shops and namesakes; of the 5 profiles checked, 1 was an in-range care creator (Creator E). Its 3 first posts were older posts shown ahead of newer ones, which is how pinned posts appear; with them included the median was 296.5 likes and comments (1.92%), without them 265 (1.72%). Pinned posts are often an account's best ones, so leave them out.
| Creator | Followers | Posts read | Median views | Engagement / views | Engagement / followers | Posts in last 30 days | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A · TikTok, US, rare-plant collector | 26,745 | 29 | 1,450 | 7.69% | 0.40% | 11 | Best fit: active, US, on topic |
| B · TikTok, US, plant care tips | 48,212 | 15 | 4,259 | 2.77% | 0.30% | 0 (last post Aug 2025) | Right topic, dormant |
| C · TikTok, US, florist and garden | 43,790 | 30 | 2,587 | 2.38% | 0.12% | 0 (last post Sep 18) | Active monthly; houseplants a minority |

| E · Instagram, plant care tips | 15,444 | 9 (3 pinned left out) | — | — | 1.72% | 9 of the 9 | Active; screen topics before outreach |

What engagement is normal for a micro influencer?
Medians vary a lot by niche and platform, so compare a creator with others in the same niche, not with a global average. As a reference, our October 2026 benchmark of 41 Brazilian micro creators on TikTok found a median engagement of 6.35% of views (counting saves) and 0.96% of followers; on Instagram, 0.75% of followers across 18 profiles. On that same basis (saves included) Creator A above scores 7.96% of views. The niche pages are in Portuguese:
| Niche | TikTok: engagement / views | TikTok: median views |
|---|---|---|
| Fitness (Portuguese) | 5.16% | 4,430 |
| Beauty (Portuguese) | 6.35% | 1,843 |
| Fashion (Portuguese) | 7.60% | 3,491 |
| Pet (Portuguese) | 9.87% | 1,893 |

How to find TikTok influencers specifically
TikTok's user search ranks accounts whose name contains your keyword, which is why our "houseplant" search was full of brand-like handles. Two habits help:
- Search videos, not only users: search the problem your product solves ("fungus gnats", "repotting monstera") and note who made the useful videos.
- Run 2–3 phrasings. Our second search ("plant care tips") found 2 of the 3 US-registered creators worth checking.
- Check the platform-reported country, not only the bio: one in-range account with an English bio was registered in Romania.
- Read the last 30 days: a high follower count with no recent uploads describes an audience that may have moved on.
- Use views, not followers, to judge reach. TikTok shows videos well beyond an account's followers, so the follower count is a weak guide to what a new video will get.
Free methods and when a tool helps
Everything in this guide can be done by hand: search the app, open each profile, write down the last 15–30 posts' views, likes, comments and shares, and compute the medians in a spreadsheet or with a free engagement rate calculator. It takes about 10 minutes per creator.
A tool saves the copying. Nolyn's influencer search runs the keyword searches, opens the profiles and returns a short explained list with the posts behind each pick, using credits per task (new accounts get 100 free). Creator databases such as Modash or HypeAuditor are faster for large programmes but start at monthly subscriptions. Whatever you use, audience location, demographics and rates still have to come from the creator.
How to find micro influencers in 7 steps
Write a one-line brief
Product, market, platform, follower range and the kind of content you want (for example: plant care tips and honest reviews, US, TikTok and Instagram, 10K–100K). It decides what you search for and what you reject.
Search the words your customers use
Run 2–3 keyword searches per platform with the problem and the category ("plant care tips", "houseplant"), and look at who made the most useful videos on those topics, not only accounts with the keyword in their name.
Filter to 10,000–100,000 followers
Treat the range as a preference. In our search it kept 9 of 40 accounts; check one or two just outside it if they are clearly on topic.
Remove brands, apps, shops and dormant accounts
Open each profile. Drop company and app pages, resellers, and anyone with no post in the last 30–60 days. This removed 4 of the 9 in-range accounts in our example.
Check the market
Look at the platform-reported country where you can, the language and the bio. A creator's location is still not proof of where the audience lives, so ask for an audience screenshot before paying.
Measure the last 15–30 posts
Compute the median views and the median engagement rate per post, (likes + comments + shares) ÷ views on TikTok, (likes + comments) ÷ followers on Instagram. Leave out pinned posts and compare creators within the same niche.
Reach out with a specific idea and require disclosure
Mention a video of theirs you liked and a concrete idea. Under the FTC's guidance, creators must clearly disclose a brand relationship, including free products, in the post itself.
Find micro influencers for your product
Describe your product, market and the creators you want. Nolyn searches TikTok, Instagram and YouTube and returns a short list with the posts behind each pick.
Questions
How many followers does a micro influencer have?
Usually 10,000 to 100,000. There is no official definition; under 10,000 is usually called nano and over 100,000 macro.
How do I find micro influencers for free?
Search TikTok and Instagram for your product's problem and category, open the accounts in the 10K–100K range, drop brands, apps and inactive accounts, and compute each creator's median views and engagement from their last 15–30 posts with a free engagement rate calculator.
How do I find TikTok influencers in my niche?
Search videos and users with 2–3 phrasings of your niche, keep the creators whose recent videos are on topic, check the account country and the last 30 days of posts, and compare median views and engagement rather than followers. In our test, the second phrasing found 2 of the 3 US-registered creators worth checking.
What is a good engagement rate for a micro influencer?
It depends on the niche and platform. In our October 2026 data, Brazilian micro creators on TikTok had a median of 6.35% of views (including saves) and 0.96% of followers; on Instagram 0.75% of followers. Compare creators against others in the same niche.
Do micro influencers have to disclose sponsored posts?
In the US, yes. The FTC says creators must disclose any financial, employment, personal or family relationship with a brand, including free or discounted products, in a way followers will see and understand.
Can Nolyn tell me where a creator's audience lives?
No. Nolyn reads public profile and post data: follower counts, bios, the platform-reported account country and each post's views and engagement. Audience location and demographics are private to the creator, so ask them for a screenshot of their analytics.
