Best time to post on Instagram: what 2,149 posts from 47 US brands show
· Nolyn research team
Most “best time to post on Instagram” charts come from a scheduling tool's customers or show when posting is busiest, without saying how each account did against its own normal. We took 47 US brand and creator accounts across six niches, read their latest 2,149 Instagram posts (Reels, carousels and photos) and compared each post with that same account's usual post. Below: the answer, the heatmap, results by niche, the method, the limits, and the data to download.
What is the best time to post on Instagram in the US?
For US brand accounts, the best times are 6–9 AM Eastern (1.42× the account's usual engagement; 70 posts from 21 accounts) and 6–9 PM Eastern (1.16×; 161 posts from 38 accounts). Tuesday is the best day (1.10×) and Friday the weakest (0.91×). Most brands post 9 AM–3 PM ET (66% of posts), where engagement was at or below normal. Based on 2,149 posts from 47 US accounts, October 2025 to October 2026.
Key findings
- Early morning is the strongest block: posts published 6–9 AM ET got 1.42× the account's usual likes and comments (90% interval 1.15–1.67×), and 11 of the 15 accounts that posted there at least twice beat their own median. Only 3% of brand posts go out then.
- Evening is the practical second choice: 6–9 PM ET scored 1.16× on a larger sample (161 posts, 38 accounts; 17 of 29 accounts above their median).
- Mid-morning is crowded and weak: 10 AM ET is the third busiest hour (218 posts) and scored 0.77× (interval 0.68–0.88×). 5 PM was just as weak (0.77×).
- Tuesday is the best day (1.10×; 30 of 46 accounts above their median). Friday is the weakest (0.91×; only 16 of 47 accounts above their median) and weekends are slightly below normal (0.96×).
- Format matters as much as the hour: carousels got a median 1.07× the account's usual likes and comments, Reels 0.92× (Reels are also judged by views, which this metric does not count). The format mix is about the same in every time block, so it does not explain the time pattern.
Instagram engagement by time of day (Eastern time)
The table shows each 3-hour block in Eastern time, the same moment in Pacific time, how much of the brands' posting happens there, and how those posts did against each account's usual post. Use the row for the moment your audience is awake: if most of your followers are on the West Coast, 6–9 PM ET is 3–6 PM their time.
US brands publish most Instagram posts between 9 AM and 3 PM Eastern. Those blocks are at or slightly below normal. The blocks that beat it are the edges of the day, before work and after it, when fewer brands post and people check their phones.

Heatmap: day × time
Each cell combines one weekday with one 3-hour block. Many cells have only 20–60 posts, so read the pattern, not single cells: the 6–9 PM column is green from Tuesday to Thursday, and Thursday and Friday mornings are red.
| Day (ET) | 6–9 AM | 9 AM–12 PM | 12–3 PM | 3–6 PM | 6–9 PM | 9 PM–12 AM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | – | 1.00× | 0.99× | 0.97× | 0.99× | – |

| Sunday | – | 1.03× | 0.89× | 0.90× | – | – |
Each cell: median engagement of posts published in that slot ÷ the same account's usual (median) post. 1.00× = a normal post. Green = at least 10% (darker: 25%) above normal, red = at least 10% (darker: 20%) below. “–” = fewer than 20 posts or 6 accounts, too few to read. 12–6 AM is left out: under 2% of posts.
Best day to post on Instagram
Brands spread their posts evenly from Monday to Friday and post about half as much on weekends (16% of posts). Tuesday and Wednesday did best, Friday did worst.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 14% | 305 / 46 | 0.99× | 0.91–1.04× | 47% |
| Tuesday | 17% | 364 / 47 | 1.10× | 1.04–1.26× | 56% |

Best time to post on Instagram by niche
Within each niche we compare only the blocks with enough posts. Fashion and tech did best in the evening, beauty in the afternoon and fitness in the morning; home brands were flat. Food & drink's 6–9 PM posts did very well but had too few posts to count.
| Niche | Accounts | When they post most (ET) | Best block (ET) | Weakest block (ET) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beauty | 9 | 12–3 PM (52% of posts) | 3–6 PM: 1.36× (56 posts) | 9 AM–12 PM: 0.86× (89 posts) |
| Fashion | 9 | 9 AM–12 PM (34% of posts) | 6–9 PM: 1.54× (40 posts) | 12–3 PM: 0.92× (102 posts) |
| Fitness & sportswear | 6 | 9 AM–12 PM (40% of posts) | 9 AM–12 PM: 1.12× (113 posts) | 12–3 PM: 0.96× (75 posts) |
| Food & drink | 9 | 12–3 PM (37% of posts) | 12–3 PM: 0.99× (157 posts) | 3–6 PM: 0.85× (77 posts) |
| Home & pets | 6 | 12–3 PM (45% of posts) | 3–6 PM: 1.00× (86 posts) | 12–3 PM: 0.99× (126 posts) |
| Tech | 8 | 9 AM–12 PM (32% of posts) | 6–9 PM: 1.26× (30 posts) | 9 AM–12 PM: 0.78× (118 posts) |
Only blocks with at least 25 posts from 5+ accounts in the niche are compared, so a niche's best block can be a busy one. With 6–9 accounts per niche these are hints, not rules.
Method
Sample. 47 public US brand and creator accounts on Instagram, picked as 9 candidates in each of 6 niches (beauty, fashion, food & drink, fitness, tech, home & pets) before we looked at any posting times, so the list cannot favour an hour. Accounts that were private, did not exist, were clearly a different company or had fewer than 20 usable posts were dropped.
Posts. The latest posts of each account (up to 50 on TikTok, 48 on Instagram), read on 2026-10-19. We removed pinned posts, posts under 2 days old (still collecting engagement) and posts older than 12 months, which leaves 2,149 posts published 2025-10-31 to 2026-10-17.
Metric. Engagement = likes + comments, the two counts Instagram shows publicly (saves and shares are private). Posts with hidden like counts are dropped. Instagram's post data does not include a publish time, so we decode it from the post ID, whose first bits are the creation time; scheduled posts are created at the scheduled time. We divide each post's engagement by the median of that account's posts in the sample, so 1.00× is a typical post for that account and 1.50× is 50% more. This lets a brand with 200,000 followers and one with 10 million count the same, and it compares each account with itself rather than big accounts with small ones.
Time. Publish times come in UTC and are converted to US Eastern time (America/New_York, with daylight saving). For each 3-hour block, hour and weekday we report the median score, the share of posts above their account's usual, and a 90% interval from 2,000 resamples of whole accounts, so one account that posts a lot at one hour cannot carry the result on its own.
Reporting rule. A block needs at least 30 posts from 8 accounts to be called a result; smaller ones are shown and marked as small samples. Differences under about 10% are treated as noise. The collection and analysis scripts, the list of accounts and the summary tables are kept with the study; the summary tables are free to download below.
How this compares with other studies
Other studies disagree with each other, mostly because they measure different things: some pool a scheduling tool's customers across countries, some use a survey of marketers, and most compare engagement across accounts of very different sizes. Our 6–9 AM result agrees with Later and SocialPilot's morning findings and contradicts HubSpot's survey, which ranks 6–9 AM as the worst window; our evening result is close to Metricool's.
| Study | What it recommends | Data behind it |
|---|---|---|
| Later (Apr 21, 2026) | 5 AM; 3–6 AM window; Monday best; Saturday worst | 6 million+ feed posts, Jan–Oct 2024, audience local time |
| SocialPilot (data to Jan 2026) | 7–9 a.m.; Tuesday–Thursday best; Saturday worst | About 7 million posts from about 50,000 accounts |
| Metricool (Jun 18, 2026) | 6–9 p.m., heaviest 8–9 p.m.; 2–5 a.m. lowest | 24,364,803 posts from 375,118 accounts |
| Buffer (Sep 23, 2026) | Thursday 9 a.m., Wednesday 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.; Friday and Saturday weakest | 9.6 million Instagram posts from 200,000+ accounts, 2024–2025 |
| Sprout Social (Mar 31, 2026) | Monday–Thursday around midday to afternoon; Saturday worst | About 2 billion engagements across all networks, local time |
| HubSpot (updated Aug 25, 2026) | 9 AM–12 PM; Friday best; 6–9 AM worst on every day | Survey of marketers (601 in the regional section), not post data |
| This study (Nolyn, Oct 2026) | 6–9 AM and 6–9 PM ET; Tuesday best; Friday weakest | 2,149 posts from 47 US brand accounts, each post vs its own account's median, Eastern time |
Read on each study's own page on 2026-10-22. Most studies give times in the viewer's or poster's local time and pool many countries; ours is US accounts in Eastern time, each post compared with its own account.
How to use this
Start with your own data: in the Instagram app, open Insights → Total followers → Most active times. If your followers are mostly in one time zone, convert our Eastern times to it.
Then test one change at a time. If you post mid-morning like most brands, move some posts to 6–9 AM or 6–9 PM for four weeks and compare each post with your own median, not with your best post. Keep the format the same, so you are testing the hour and not the format.
Do not skip Fridays because of a 10% difference. Consistency, the format and the post itself matter more; use the timing as a tiebreaker for the posts you can schedule.
Limits
This shows correlation, not causation. Brands choose when to post, and a slot can look good because better content (launches, collaborations, giveaways) is scheduled there. The early-morning block has fewer posts and a wider interval than the daytime ones.
The sample is 47 established brand and creator accounts with teams, not small businesses or new creators, whose followers may behave differently. Results are for US accounts in Eastern time; we did not check where each account's followers live.
We count likes and comments only. Reach, saves and shares are private, and Reels views are kept separately. Engagement was read once, so older posts had longer to collect it; that affects every hour the same way but adds noise.

Each row is one slot (3-hour block, hour, weekday, weekday × block or niche × block) for one market and platform, with the number of posts and accounts, the share of all posts, the median score against each account's usual post, its 90% interval and the share of posts above the account's usual. Questions
Does posting time matter on Instagram?
A little. In our sample the best and the weakest common blocks differ by about 50% (1.42× at 6–9 AM vs 0.94× at 9 AM–12 PM ET), while format and content move results more. Timing is worth testing once you post regularly.
What is the best time to post on Instagram in Pacific or Central time?
The same moments shifted: 6–9 AM Eastern is 5–8 AM Central and 3–6 AM Pacific, and 6–9 PM Eastern is 5–8 PM Central and 3–6 PM Pacific. If your followers are mostly on the West Coast, test 6–9 AM and 6–9 PM in your own local time as well.
What is the best day to post on Instagram?
Tuesday, with a median 1.10× the account's usual engagement across 364 posts from 47 US accounts. Friday was the weakest day (0.91×), and weekends were slightly below normal.
What is the best time to post Reels?
We did not find a separate pattern for Reels: the share of Reels, carousels and photos is about the same in every block. Carousels earned more likes and comments relative to each account's usual post, while Reels earn more views.
Does this apply to small accounts?
We measured 47 established US brand and creator accounts. Small accounts may see different patterns. Use this as a starting point and check Most active times in your own Insights.
