How to get reviews on Amazon: the allowed ways, what is banned, and how many you need
· Nolyn research team
This guide is for Amazon sellers and brands launching or rescuing a listing. It covers the review channels Amazon allows, what gets accounts suspended, and how to use reviews you already have. Policies are from Amazon's own pages (Customer Reviews tool, Amazon Vine and Community Guidelines), read on October 24, 2026. The data comes from Nolyn runs: ratings counts of 182 listings in 10 Amazon US best-seller lists (October 10–23, 2026) and the review summary of the #1 humidifier on amazon.com (October 17, 2026).
How do you get reviews on Amazon?
Use the channels Amazon itself offers: the Request a Review button in Seller Central, Amazon Vine (up to 30 units for products with fewer than 30 reviews, for Brand Registry sellers using FBA), and a neutral, unincentivized review request; never pay or give free products for reviews outside Vine. You need fewer than you think: in Nolyn's October 2026 read of 182 Amazon US best-seller listings, 37 had under 1,000 ratings and 6 listings with under 100 ratings already showed 1K+ bought in past month.
How many reviews do you need on Amazon?
Fewer than the leaders have. Across 182 listings in 10 Amazon US best-seller lists, the median listing had about 4,950 ratings, but 37 had fewer than 1,000 and 10 fewer than 100. Of the 155 listings showing 1K+ bought in past month, 25 had fewer than 1,000 ratings and 6 fewer than 100.
The first reviews matter most: they move a listing from no stars to a visible rating. Aim first for a steady flow from real buyers, then for fixing whatever the first reviews criticize.
| Ratings count | Listings | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Under 30 | 6 | 3% |
| Under 100 | 10 | 5% |
| Under 1,000 | 37 | 20% |
| Under 5,000 | 92 | 51% |
| Under 10,000 | 128 | 70% |

The ways Amazon allows you to get reviews
Amazon lists three tools for sellers who want more reviews, and its Community Guidelines allow one more thing: asking buyers for an honest review without any incentive. Everything else is a risk to your account.
| Channel | What it does | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| Request a Review | Sends Amazon's standard review request for an order; click it on the Order details page in Seller Central | Sellers in Seller Central |
| Amazon Vine | Vine Voices, invited reviewers, get the product free and post reviews labeled as Vine reviews; up to 30 units per product; not billed until the first review is published, and not charged if none arrives within 90 days | Professional plan, Brand Registry, FBA listing; new products before launch or existing products with fewer than 30 reviews |
| Customer Reviews tool | Shows the last 12 months of reviews; for ratings under three stars you can contact the buyer to offer a full refund or support | Professional plan and Brand Representative of a brand in Brand Registry |
| Neutral review request | Asking buyers for honest feedback, for example on a package insert or in a follow-up, without any reward or steering | Any seller, within Amazon's communication guidelines |
Amazon's own review channels (sell.amazon.com and Community Guidelines, checked October 24, 2026)
What is not allowed
Amazon's Community Guidelines say free products for reviews may only come through the official Vine program, and that accepting free products or compensation directly from sellers or brands in exchange for reviews is strictly prohibited. Its seller pages add that you must not attempt to influence ratings, ask buyers to remove negative reviews or to post positive ones.
In practice that rules out paying for reviews, refunding buyers after they post a review, review-swap groups, asking only happy customers to review, offering discounts or gifts for a review, and asking friends and family to review your product. Amazon says it may remove the content and suspend or terminate the account, and may take legal action under laws such as the Federal Trade Commission Act. Note also that only shoppers who spent $50 on Amazon.com with a card in the past 12 months can post reviews, so a list of friends would not work reliably anyway.
Use the reviews you already have: variations and complaints
Ratings are pooled across a product's variations. On the #1 humidifier on amazon.com (October 17, 2026), 64,077 ratings and 4.4 stars covered the whole family, and 6 of the 8 top reviews shown on the page had been written on other variants (other tank sizes and smart models). If you sell real size or color versions of one product, listing them as variations of one parent keeps new variants from starting at zero. Group only real versions of the same product; pooling reviews from different products misleads buyers.
Reviews also tell you what will cost you the next ones. On the same humidifier, 1,328 of 2,222 durability mentions were negative (60%) and 840 of 2,812 ease-of-cleaning mentions (30%), while 74% of ratings were five stars. The most helpful review on the page was a 3-star review from March 2023 with 194 helpful votes. A complaint that keeps coming back lowers new ratings no matter how many review requests you send: fix it in the product, the listing or the insert first.
A review plan for a new listing
Before launch: enroll in Brand Registry and Vine if you can, and set the Vine units so the first reviews arrive in the first weeks. Write the listing so expectations match the product; many low ratings come from a mismatch (size, noise, capacity) rather than defects.
After launch: click Request a Review on every order, add a neutral insert asking for honest feedback, and answer every rating under three stars through the Customer Reviews tool. Each month, read the review aspects of your listing and of the top competitors to see which complaint to fix next.

Questions
How do I get my first reviews on Amazon?
Enroll in Brand Registry and Amazon Vine if you sell through FBA, which lets you offer up to 30 units to Vine reviewers; then click Request a Review on every order and include a neutral request for honest feedback. Do not offer anything in return for a review.
Is it legal to pay for Amazon reviews?
Amazon prohibits it: its Community Guidelines say accepting free products or compensation from sellers in exchange for reviews is strictly prohibited, and free products for reviews may only come through Vine. Amazon may remove the reviews, suspend or terminate the account and take legal action under the FTC Act.
How much does Amazon Vine cost?
Amazon says you are not billed until the first Vine review is published and are not charged if none arrives within 90 days; its Vine page (checked October 24, 2026) offers to enroll up to two products free and a $200 Vine credit for new sellers who enroll a brand in Brand Registry. Check the current fee in Seller Central before enrolling.
Can I ask customers to leave a review?
Yes, if the request is neutral and has no incentive. Amazon's example of an allowed message is a request to share honest feedback by leaving a review. You cannot ask only satisfied buyers, ask for positive reviews or ask buyers to remove negative ones.
How many reviews do you need to sell on Amazon?
There is no fixed number. In 182 Amazon US best-seller listings Nolyn read in October 2026, 37 had under 1,000 ratings, and 6 listings with under 100 ratings already showed 1K+ bought in past month.
Can I remove a negative review?
No. You cannot change or remove reviews, but you can report a review that breaks Amazon's Community Guidelines, and you can contact buyers who rated under three stars through the Customer Reviews tool to offer a refund or support.
Do reviews carry over to new variations?
Ratings are shared across the variations of one parent listing, which is why 6 of the 8 top reviews on the #1 humidifier were written on other variants. Use it only for real versions of the same product.
