How do you analyze a YouTube video?

Compare the video's views and like rate with the channel's own recent videos, map its transcript into sections, and group the top comments by theme. In Nolyn's October 18, 2026 sample, MKBHD's “WTF is a Googlebook?” had 8.33M views after 10 days, 1.5 times the median of the channel's 30 latest videos, and 27 of its top 100 comments called the device essentially an Android tablet.

Median of the 30 latest videos (channel page, rounded)May–Oct–5.6M––

The analyzed video and 8 other recent @mkbhd videos whose details returned exact numbers. Like rate = likes ÷ views; YouTube returned no comment count for this video. The last row is the median of the 30 latest videos on the channel page, where views are rounded.

Above the channel's typical video, below its recent run

After 9.7 days the video had 8,330,527 views, 1.5 times the 5.6M median of the channel's 30 latest videos, but only 7th of the 9 newest, where September's iPhone videos lift the median to 11.6M. Its 1.18% like rate is close to their 1.22% median.

One question carries the whole script

The first 30 seconds ask “what is the difference between this and a Chromebook?”. The video then explains what a Googlebook is (0:38), its phone and Gemini features (2:00), the $900 starting price (4:30), the Play Store compatibility labels (5:30), the Asus and Dell hardware (7:30) and ends with grades for nine kinds of buyer from 10:00.

Comments answer it: “an Android tablet”

27 of the 100 top comments call the device essentially an Android tablet, a phone OS or a pricier Chromebook, holding about 52% of the likes on the comments read. 13 mention the price, 13 the name and 7 predict Google will drop it.

Viewers quote specific moments

The second most-liked comment (14K likes) is about the auto-rotate toggle that “does nothing”, shown around 2:40; another quotes the “Better on the Website” label against the $900 price. Follow-up ideas: a Googlebook against the $750 Chromebook Plus, and a test of the apps people need.

Every figure was recomputed from the saved YouTube responses of this run. Comment themes were counted with fixed keyword rules; comment likes are YouTube's rounded values. One video's detail call returned no numbers and is left out.

How the YouTube video analyzer works

  1. Read the video

Title, channel, publish date, length, views, likes, comment count, description and tags.

  2. Read the transcript

The captions or transcript, turned into the video's opening promise, sections with timestamps and ending.

  3. Compare with the channel

Median views and engagement rate of the channel's recent long-form videos, and how far this video sits above or below them.

  4. Read the comments

Up to 100 top comments grouped by theme and question, then what worked, what viewers wanted and three follow-up ideas.

Who uses the YouTube video analyzer

Creators planning the next video

See which part of a video viewers reacted to, what they asked that the video did not answer, and how it did against your own median.

Brands checking a sponsored or review video

Read what viewers said about the product in a review or sponsored video, and whether it beat the channel's usual views.

Agencies studying a competitor's hit

Break down a competitor's best video: its opening, sections and length, and the comment themes that show why it worked.

Limits

Only public videos and public numbers. Nolyn cannot see YouTube Studio analytics such as watch time, audience retention, impressions, click-through rate or revenue. Dislikes are not public. The transcript is only available when the video has captions, including automatic ones. The comments read are the top 100 or so YouTube returns first, not every comment. Numbers keep changing for new videos; each sample shows its date.

Questions

What is a YouTube video analyzer?

A tool that reads a video's public numbers, transcript and comments and explains how the video performed and why. Nolyn's YouTube Video Analyzer compares the video with the same channel's recent videos, maps its sections from the transcript and groups the top comments by theme.

How do I analyze a YouTube video?

Compare it with the channel's own recent uploads: views against the channel's median, likes and comments per view, then the script's structure and the top comments. Video age matters: a 10-day-old video is still gaining views.

How is the engagement rate of a YouTube video calculated?

(likes + comments) ÷ views. When YouTube does not return a comment count, as in the example, Nolyn compares likes ÷ views instead and says so. To work out a rate yourself without signing in, use the free engagement rate calculator.

Can I analyze someone else's YouTube video?

Yes, any public video, including a competitor's or a creator's you want to sponsor. Private and unlisted videos you cannot open are not available.

Does it work without captions or for Shorts?

Shorts links work. Without captions, including automatic ones, Nolyn cannot read the transcript and analyzes the numbers and comments only.

Is there a free YouTube video analyzer?

You can start free: new accounts get 100 one-time credits, no card required. One analysis like this uses about 63 credits, so the free credits cover about 1 runs. Paid plans add monthly credits.

Do I need to sign up?

To run it, yes: sign in with Google. It is free and asks for no card. You can read the example and fill in the form before signing in.
