· Nolyn research team

Alibaba.com is the default starting point for sourcing from factories, but it is not the only marketplace, and for many small sellers not the best fit: minimums are often higher than a first order, and some products are cheaper one level up the chain on 1688. We read each alternative's own pages on October 30, 2026 and recorded where its suppliers are, what buyers pay, minimum orders and what buyer protection actually covers. Where a site did not state something or blocked reading, we say so. We also add real 1688 and Amazon US prices from our own data.

What are the best sites like Alibaba?

For Chinese factories in English, Made-in-China.com and Global Sources are the closest alternatives; DHgate suits small orders shipped from China; 1688 has the lowest prices and 1-piece minimums but needs a sourcing agent. For US suppliers, use Thomasnet (500,000+ North American suppliers) or Faire (free for retailers, 60 days to pay). Checked on each site on 2026-10-30. In Nolyn's October 24 data, US prices ran 4.4x to 42.6x the 1688 median for 9 product types.

How we checked

  • Buyer costs, minimum orders, protection terms and supplier locations come from each site's official pages, read on 2026-10-30. We did not create buyer accounts or place orders.
  • "Not stated" means the pages we could read did not say; several sites (1688, Faire's help articles, Thomasnet's main site, AliExpress) blocked automated reading or showed a bot check, which we did not try to get past.
  • Sites are grouped by where suppliers are: China first, then India, then North America.
  • The 1688 and Amazon US figures are from Nolyn's own data pulls on October 24, 2026. Nolyn is included only for research before sourcing; it is not a marketplace.

The alternatives

1. 1688

Best for: the lowest factory prices and 1-piece minimums, if you use a sourcing agentPrice: Free to browse; prices in CNY; a sourcing agent usually charges a percentage or a fee per order

1688 is Alibaba Group's domestic Chinese wholesale marketplace, and many Alibaba.com and AliExpress sellers buy there. Its site, checkout and shipping are built for buyers in China; its cross-border channel (跨境专供) is in Chinese, priced in yuan, and offers sourcing agents, cross-border payment and logistics to sellers on overseas marketplaces. We found no official English buyer site. In 660 listings Nolyn pulled on October 24, 2026, 56% of those with a price ladder started at 1 piece and 81% of those naming a business type were manufacturers, and 77% of those showing a location were in Zhejiang. For 9 US-demand product types, the median 1688 price was a fraction of the US price (table below).

Pros

  • Lowest prices of any site here
  • Many 1-piece minimums
  • Most sellers are manufacturers

Cons

  • Chinese-language site and payment
  • Usually needs a sourcing agent
  • Protection depends on your agent

2. Made-in-China.com

Best for: an English-language alternative to Alibaba.com for Chinese factoriesPrice: Free to use; Secured Trading charges buyers a transaction fee when they pay online (rate not shown on the FAQ page)

Made-in-China.com is a B2B marketplace of Chinese manufacturers and suppliers, in English. Its Secured Trading service lets buyers pay online with a 30-day refund policy after receiving goods; customized products are excluded, and buyers pay a transaction fee on online payment that is not refunded with the order. The US is among the supported countries. Minimum orders are set per listing and ranged from 1 piece to very large lots in the listings we saw.

Pros

  • Export-focused, in English
  • 30-day refund policy on Secured Trading
  • Many factory listings

Cons

  • Buyer transaction fee on online payment
  • No refunds on customized products
  • Minimums vary widely

3. Global Sources

Best for: buyers who also want to meet suppliers at trade showsPrice: Buyer fees not stated; Buyer Protection dispute help is free

Global Sources combines an online B2B catalog with its Hong Kong trade shows, and also mentions shows in mainland China, Vietnam and Indonesia. Listings show a minimum order (for example 100 pieces). Its Buyer Protection helps resolve disputes free of charge, and it suggests PayPal for samples and direct orders below US$10,000. It is closest to Alibaba.com in format, with a stronger trade-show link.

Pros

  • Trade shows plus online catalog
  • Free dispute assistance
  • Suppliers beyond mainland China

Cons

  • Buyer costs not published
  • Typical minimums higher than 1688 or DHgate
  • Protection is dispute help, not escrow

4. DHgate

Best for: small orders shipped from China without a sourcing agentPrice: Join free; prices in US dollars; no buyer fee stated

DHgate calls itself a cross-border B2B wholesale marketplace in China, with 2 million registered buyers from over 220 countries, and its site runs in English and US dollars. It suits small orders and pitches itself to drop shippers. Its Buyer Protection refunds orders that are not shipped or do not arrive by the estimated date, and most items can be reported within 21 days of receipt. It does not publish a minimum-order policy; minimums are per listing.

Pros

  • Small orders, English and USD
  • Refund if not delivered
  • No agent needed

Cons

  • Shipping from China, slower to the US
  • Quality varies by seller
  • No published minimum-order policy

5. IndiaMART

Best for: sourcing from Indian manufacturers (textiles, leather, handicrafts and more)Price: Buyer fees not stated; Payment Protection up to ₹5,00,000 for non-delivery

IndiaMART is India's largest B2B marketplace, and IndiaMART Export is built to connect international buyers with Indian exporters, with an English and US-dollar view. Its Payment Protection covers non-delivery only, up to ₹5,00,000, for TrustSeal suppliers paid by Indian bank transfer, with claims within 60 days; poor quality and partial delivery are not covered, so for US buyers paying from abroad, protection is limited.

Pros

  • Indian suppliers in English
  • Export portal for overseas buyers
  • Some payment protection

Cons

  • Protection covers non-delivery only
  • Built around Indian bank transfers
  • Minimums not stated

6. Thomasnet

Best for: finding US and North American manufacturersPrice: Not stated; you contact suppliers directly

Thomas (Thomasnet) is an industrial sourcing platform listing more than 500,000 North American suppliers. It is a directory rather than a marketplace: you send a request for information or contact the supplier, and price, minimums and payment are agreed with them. It is the place to look for US-made or nearshore production, not for cheap consumer goods. Its main site blocked automated reading on October 30, 2026, so these facts come from its business site.

Pros

  • 500,000+ North American suppliers
  • Good for US-made production
  • Free supplier profiles

Cons

  • No checkout or buyer protection
  • Industrial focus
  • Pricing negotiated per supplier

7. Faire

Best for: US boutiques and resellers buying finished, branded products in small quantitiesPrice: Free to sign up for retailers; 60 days to pay interest free; low or no minimums; free returns on the first order with each brand

Faire is a wholesale marketplace where independent retailers buy from brands, not factories. Retailers sign up free, can pay in 60 days interest free, and get free returns on every first order with a brand; the home page promises low or no minimums. Eligibility for payment terms and per-brand minimums are set in its help articles, which blocked automated reading on October 30, 2026. Prices are wholesale prices of finished branded goods, so margins are thinner than factory sourcing but there is no import step.

Pros

  • Free for retailers
  • 60 days to pay
  • No import, customs or agent

Cons

  • Branded goods, higher unit prices
  • Terms depend on eligibility
  • Not for private label

8. Wholesale Central

Best for: US small retailers looking for US wholesalersPrice: Free to buy; Instant Checkout by card, wallet or bank transfer

Wholesale Central has connected wholesalers and retailers since 1997 and is strictly B2B. Buyers join free and can pay through Instant Checkout; suppliers pay 0% commission. Minimum orders and buyer protection are not stated on its pages, so agree both with each wholesaler before ordering.

Pros

  • Free, US-focused
  • Strictly wholesale
  • Checkout on site

Cons

  • Buyer protection not stated
  • Minimums set per supplier
  • Smaller catalog

9. Nolyn

Best for: checking 1688 prices and US demand for a product before you source itPrice: Credits per task; 100 free credits at sign-up; Plus $19/mo for 1,500 credits, Pro $49/mo for 4,000

Nolyn is not a marketplace and you cannot order through it. It reads 1688 listings (price ladders, minimum orders, seller type and location) and the US side of the same product (Amazon US prices, ratings and best-seller rank, TikTok Shop US units sold), so you know the price floor and the US demand before you contact a supplier or an agent. The 1688 tables on this page come from Nolyn runs on October 24, 2026.

Pros

  • 1688 data in English, no account in China
  • US price and demand next to the wholesale price
  • Pay per task

Cons

  • No ordering, payment or protection
  • Not a supplier directory
  • Public listing data only

1688 vs US prices: what the wholesale price leaves you

On October 24, 2026 Nolyn searched 1688 for 9 product types with US demand and compared the median first-tier price of matching listings with the median US price on Amazon. US prices ran 4.4x (meat / food thermometer) to 42.6x (jar opener) the 1688 median. It is type against type, not the same item, and the 1688 price excludes China shipping, the agent's fee, freight and US duty, so it is a floor, not a landed cost. Run your own numbers in the landed cost calculator.

Median 1688 first-tier price (listings matched) vs median Amazon US price, by product type. 1688 searched October 24, 2026; 1 CNY = US$0.1499 (ECB, October 23, 2026).

When Alibaba.com is still the right choice

Alibaba.com is free to join, quotes in English and US dollars, and its Trade Assurance holds your payment in escrow until you confirm receipt, with refunds for orders not shipped, lost, defective, wrong or damaged, claimed within 30 days of delivery (60 for its Enterprise buyers). For a first private-label order from a factory without an agent, that protection is hard to beat. Look elsewhere when you need 1-piece minimums or the lowest price (1688 through an agent), small orders shipped to you (DHgate), US-made goods (Thomasnet) or finished branded stock without importing (Faire, Wholesale Central).

Sites we left out

Tundra, once a free US wholesale marketplace, did not load on October 30, 2026 (its security certificate expired in October 2024). Abound's address now redirects to Carro, a dropship and marketplace platform. AliExpress is a retail site with small-quantity prices and blocked automated reading, so we could not check any official wholesale terms; it is covered in our dropshipping suppliers comparison through ordering tools such as DSers.

Questions

What is cheaper than Alibaba?

1688 is usually cheaper, because many Alibaba.com sellers buy there. For 9 product types Nolyn checked on October 24, 2026 US prices were 4.4x to 42.6x the median 1688 price, but you need a sourcing agent and must add shipping, the agent's fee, freight and US duty.

Can I buy from 1688 directly from the US?

Not easily. 1688's site and checkout are in Chinese and built for buyers in China, and its cross-border channel is aimed at sellers on overseas marketplaces through sourcing agents and cross-border payment. Most US buyers order through an agent who pays, inspects and ships.

Is DHgate the same as Alibaba?

No. Both are Chinese B2B marketplaces, but DHgate is built for small orders in US dollars without an agent, with refunds when an order is not shipped or not delivered, while Alibaba.com is aimed at factory orders with Trade Assurance escrow.

Are there US alternatives to Alibaba?

Yes: Thomasnet lists more than 500,000 North American suppliers for US-made production, and Faire and Wholesale Central connect US retailers with wholesalers and brands. Prices are higher than Chinese factories, but there is no import step.

Which Alibaba alternative has buyer protection?

Made-in-China.com (Secured Trading, 30-day refund policy, transaction fee on online payment), DHgate (refund if not shipped or delivered, report within 21 days), Global Sources (free dispute help) and Faire (free returns on first orders with a brand). IndiaMART's protection covers non-delivery only. Checked 2026-10-30.

Does Tundra still exist?

Its website did not load on October 30, 2026 because its security certificate expired in October 2024, so we could not confirm it still operates and left it out.
