Whatnot and eBay both sell trading cards, sneakers, collectibles and secondhand fashion, but they sell them differently. Whatnot is a live-shopping marketplace: you run a show, buyers bid in real time, and Whatnot sends you a prepaid label. eBay is the oldest US resale marketplace: fixed-price listings and auctions that sit in search for weeks. To compare the fees honestly we priced the same order on both, a $25 item with $5 shipping paid by the buyer and no sales tax, using each platform's own US fee pages read on October 30, 2026. The Whatnot figures use the same rules as our Whatnot fee calculator. eBay's rate depends on the category, so every eBay figure names the one it uses: most categories (13.6%) unless we say trading cards (13.25%) or athletic shoes (8% from $150).

Is Whatnot or eBay cheaper to sell on?

Whatnot, for most items. On a $25 item with $5 shipping paid by the buyer, US fees checked October 30, 2026 come to $3.17 on Whatnot (8% commission plus 2.9% + $0.30 processing) and $4.48 on eBay (13.6% of the total plus $0.40), so you keep $1.31 more on Whatnot. eBay wins on sneakers of $150 or more, where it charges 8% and no per-order fee: $16.00 on a $200 pair against $22.25 on Whatnot.

One US order: $25 item + $5 shipping paid by the buyer ($30), no sales tax, standard rates, fees from Whatnot's Help Center and eBay's Selling fees page checked on 2026-10-30. Whatnot at the 8% rate of sellers under $15,000 in a 4-week period; eBay at the 13.6% rate of most categories.

Whatnot and eBay side by side

Whatnot

Best for: sellers who can run live shows of cards, collectibles, sneakers or fashionPrice: 8% commission on the item price under $15,000 of sales in a 4-week period (Coins 4%), plus 2.9% + $0.30 processing on item + shipping + tax (US, checked 2026-10-30)

Whatnot is built around live selling: you go live in a category, buyers bid or buy during the show, and Whatnot handles payment and sends a prepaid label. Since September 21, 2026 the commission depends on your sales in the last four-week period and the category: 8% for most categories under $15,000, falling to between 4% and 6.5% from $500,000 a period depending on category, and 4% for coins from the start (3.5% at the top tier). Commission is charged on the item price only, but the 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing applies to the item, shipping and tax. On the $30 order that is $2.00 + $1.17 = $3.17. For listed high-value categories, Whatnot charges no commission on the part of an order above $1,500, a limited-time promotion. The catch is effort: sales happen while you are live, so your hours on camera are part of the cost.

Pros

  • $3.17 on the $30 order, $1.31 less than eBay
  • Commission skips shipping and tax
  • Rates fall with volume from $15,000 a period
  • 0% commission above $1,500 in listed categories (promotion)

Cons

  • Most sales need you live on camera
  • $0.30 per order hurts cheap items: $1.54 on a $10 item
  • Processing is still charged on shipping and tax
  • Fewer categories than eBay

eBay

Best for: listings that sell while you sleep, rare items and sneakers of $150 or morePrice: 13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500 for most categories + $0.40 per order over $10; trading cards 13.25%; athletic shoes 8% from $150 with no per-order fee (US, checked 2026-10-30)

eBay charges a final value fee when an item sells, worked out on the total amount of the sale: the item, handling, the shipping the buyer pays and sales tax. For most categories it is 13.6% of that total up to $7,500 per item and 2.35% above, plus $0.40 per order over $10 ($0.30 at $10 or less). Payment processing is included, so there is no separate card fee. On the $30 order that is $4.08 + $0.40 = $4.48. Some categories differ: trading cards, collectible card games and comics pay 13.25%; Women's Bags & Handbags 15% up to $2,000; men's and women's athletic shoes pay 8% and no per-order fee at $150 or more. Listings stay up without you: the first 250 a month are free, then $0.35 each.

Pros

  • Listings sell around the clock, no live show needed
  • Processing included in the final value fee
  • 8% and no per-order fee on athletic shoes from $150
  • Every category, from car parts to handbags

Cons

  • $4.48 on the $30 order, the higher of the two
  • Fee includes shipping and sales tax
  • 6% more on fees if your account falls below standard
  • 1.65% international fee unless you use eBay International Shipping

The same sale at five price points

Both platforms take a percentage plus a fixed amount, so the gap grows with the price. Every row has $5 of shipping paid by the buyer and no sales tax. The trading card column uses eBay's 13.25% rate for trading cards and collectible card games; Whatnot's Trading card games rate is the same 8% as most categories. Work out your own Whatnot order, with your tier rate, in the Whatnot fee calculator.

Category rates: where each one is cheaper

eBay sets its rate by category; Whatnot sets it by category and by your sales in the last four-week period. These are the rates a seller starting out pays on each, from the two official fee pages.

Trading cards: Whatnot is cheaper at every price. A $2,000 card with $5 shipping pays $266.06 on eBay (13.25% of $2,005 plus $0.40). On Whatnot it pays $218.45 at the full 8%, or $178.45 while the high-value promotion charges no commission above $1,500.

Sneakers: eBay is cheaper from $150. A $200 pair pays $16.00 on eBay (8%, no per-order fee; shipping is not charged a fee when it sells through Authenticity Guarantee with eBay's free label). On Whatnot the same pair with $5 shipping pays $16.00 commission plus $6.25 processing, $22.25 in all.

Whatnot processing is 2.9% + $0.30 on item + shipping + tax at every tier. eBay rates apply to the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 per item unless stated. Checked on 2026-10-30.

Why shipping and sales tax matter more on eBay

eBay's 13.6% applies to everything the buyer pays, including sales tax, which eBay collects in states that have one. With 8% sales tax the $30 order pays $4.81 on eBay, $0.33 more. On Whatnot the commission ignores tax and only the 2.9% processing touches it, so the same order pays $3.24, $0.07 more.

Shipping works the same way: on Whatnot the buyer pays a flat $7.75 for a 1–5 lb USPS Ground Advantage label, and only processing is charged on it. On eBay the buyer's shipping is part of the fee base, so a heavy item with expensive shipping costs you more in fees.

Where Nolyn fits, and where it does not

Nolyn, our product, has no Whatnot or eBay data: it cannot show you sold prices on eBay, Whatnot show results or what a card went for last week. What it does is read live Amazon US and TikTok Shop US listings: what similar new products sell for, which listings show the most sales and what buyers complain about in reviews. Resellers use that to check the retail price ceiling before they buy stock, for example in our products to resell list built from 510 Amazon US listings under $25.

Questions

Does Whatnot take less than eBay?

For most items, yes. A $25 item with $5 shipping pays $3.17 on Whatnot and $4.48 on eBay (most categories, fees checked October 30, 2026). The exception is athletic shoes of $150 or more, where eBay charges 8% and no per-order fee.

What are Whatnot's fees in 2026?

US sellers pay a commission on the item price, 8% for most categories until their sales in a 4-week period reach $15,000 (Coins 4%), lower after that by category, plus 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing on the item, shipping and tax. That is $3.17 on a $25 item with $5 shipping.

What are eBay's fees in 2026?

For most categories, 13.6% of the total amount of the sale (item, shipping, handling and sales tax) up to $7,500, plus $0.40 per order over $10. Trading cards pay 13.25%, athletic shoes of $150 or more 8% with no per-order fee. The first 250 listings a month are free, then $0.35 each.

Is Whatnot or eBay better for trading cards?

On fees, Whatnot: $3.17 against $4.38 on a $25 card with $5 shipping, and $218.45 against $266.06 on a $2,000 card ($178.45 on Whatnot with the high-value promotion). eBay keeps a listing up until it sells, which suits slow, high-value cards without a live audience.

Is Whatnot or eBay better for sneakers?

eBay, from $150: 8% and no per-order fee, $16.00 on a $200 pair. Whatnot charges its Fashion rate (8% under $15,000 a period) plus processing, $22.25 on the same pair with $5 shipping.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?

Yes. eBay's final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes buyer-paid shipping and sales tax. With 8% sales tax the $30 example pays $4.81 instead of $4.48. Whatnot's commission leaves both out; only its 2.9% processing includes them.
