Private label products: what they are, private label vs white label, and where a new brand still fits
· Nolyn research team
This guide is for Amazon, Shopify and TikTok Shop sellers deciding whether to launch their own brand. It explains what private label products are, how private label differs from white label, and how to tell from public Amazon data whether a category still has room for a new brand. The data comes from 10 Amazon US best-seller lists (182 listings) that Nolyn read between October 10 and 23, 2026: five category best-seller lists and five best-seller searches. Brand requirements are from Amazon's Brand Registry page, read on October 24, 2026.
What are private label products?
Private label products are made by a manufacturer and sold under the seller's own brand, often with changes to the design, packaging or bundle. Whether one can work depends on the category. In Nolyn's October 2026 read of 10 Amazon US best-seller lists, 13 of the top 20 spoon rests carried no brand at the start of the title and the median listing had 886 ratings, while all 10 top water flossers came from just three brands with a median of 12,612 ratings.
What private label products are
A private label product is made by a manufacturer and sold under a brand the seller owns. The seller usually picks or changes the product (color, material, size, bundle, packaging), puts its brand on it and controls the listing. The manufacturer often makes near-identical goods for other sellers; what is exclusive is the brand and whatever changes you paid for.
Retailers do this too. Amazon Basics is Amazon's own private label, and it held 2 of the top 20 places in Amazon's Can Openers best sellers on October 23, 2026, next to KitchenAid, Hamilton Beach and OXO.
On Amazon, owning the brand matters because of Brand Registry. Amazon describes it as a free program, and it requires a brand name or logo permanently affixed to the product or packaging, plus a pending or registered trademark from a government trademark office in a country with an Amazon store. Brand Registry unlocks A+ Content, Brand Analytics and protection tools that a reseller of someone else's brand does not get.
Private label vs white label
The two terms are often used as synonyms, but they describe different deals. White label is a finished, generic product that a manufacturer sells to many resellers, each of whom puts their own brand on it without changing the product. Private label is made for one seller's brand, usually with changes the seller specifies, and is not sold to others under that brand.
| Private label | White label | |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Changed to your spec (design, material, bundle) | The manufacturer's standard product |
| Who else sells it | Only you, under your brand | Many resellers, each with their own label |
| Minimum order | Higher: custom tooling, colors or packaging | Lower: stock product, logo or label only |
| Time to launch | Longer: samples and changes | Shorter |
| How you compete | On a product difference buyers can see in reviews | On brand, listing, price and marketing |
| Best for | Categories where the leaders share a fixable complaint | Testing demand fast, consumables, simple goods |
Private label vs white label
How to tell if a category has room for a private label
You cannot see sales by brand on Amazon, but the first page of best sellers shows four signals anyone can count. Take the top 20 best sellers for the product and record:
Unbranded listings: titles that start with a product description (“Ceramic Spoon Rest for Stove Top…”) instead of a brand. Many unbranded best sellers mean buyers choose on product and price, not brand. Distinct brands and the largest brand's count: three brands holding the whole list is a closed market. Median ratings count: the review moat a new listing has to climb. Young listings that sell: products with under 1,000 ratings that still show 1K+ bought in past month prove a new listing can sell without years of reviews (check whether they belong to a big brand's new variant).
Which Amazon categories still have room: 10 best-seller lists
Here are the four signals for 10 Amazon US best-seller lists read by Nolyn in October 2026. Brand is the brand that starts the title, checked by hand. Price is the median listed price of the same listings.

Private label signals in 10 Amazon US best-seller lists (Nolyn, October 10–23, 2026)
What the data says
Spoon rests and electric spin scrubbers are the open end. In spoon rests, 13 of the top 20 listings are unbranded, no brand has more than one listing, the median listing has 886 ratings and 6 listings with under 1,000 ratings already show 1K+ bought in past month. Spin scrubbers look similar at a higher price: 8 of 16 unbranded, 5 young listings selling 1K–4K a month, median price $26.49. In both, buyers pick on design and price, which is what a private label controls.
Water flossers and insulated tumblers are the closed end. The top 10 water flossers come from three brands (five COSLUS, four Waterpik, one Onlyone) with no unbranded listing and a median of 12,612 ratings. In tumblers, YETI, Stanley, HydroJug, Simple Modern and Owala hold 10 of the top 20 places and only 3 of 20 are unbranded. A new brand there needs a real product difference and a marketing budget, not just a logo.
Kitchen thermometers, jar openers and oil sprayers sit in between: many unbranded listings (7–9 of 20), but the leaders carry thousands to tens of thousands of ratings. A private label can sell there at median prices of $7.99–$13.48 if it fixes something the leaders' reviews complain about, but price competition is tight: the median oil sprayer costs $7.99.
Two cautions. Low prices leave little room: at a $9.99 median, Amazon's referral and fulfillment fees take a large share before product cost, so check the margin with a fee calculator before ordering. And a best-seller list is a snapshot; read it again before you commit.
How to launch a private label product
Pick a category where the four signals say open or mixed, then read the reviews of the top five listings to find the complaint you will fix. Source two or three manufacturers, order samples, and change the one thing buyers complain about. Register a trademark early (Brand Registry accepts a pending one), design packaging with the brand on it, and launch with a listing that leads with the fix, priced inside the band where the best sellers cluster.

Questions
What is the difference between private label and white label?
White label is a manufacturer's standard product sold to many resellers who each add their own brand. Private label is made for one seller's brand, usually with changes to the product, packaging or bundle, and is not sold under that brand by anyone else.
Is white label vs private label the same thing?
No, though many suppliers use the words loosely. Ask the supplier directly whether the product will be changed to your spec and whether they sell the same item to other brands; that tells you which one you are buying.
What private label products sell well on Amazon?
Products where buyers choose on design and price rather than brand. In Nolyn's October 2026 data, spoon rests (13 of the top 20 unbranded) and electric spin scrubbers (8 of 16 unbranded) showed the most room, while water flossers and insulated tumblers were held by a few established brands.
Do I need a trademark to sell private label on Amazon?
Not to sell, but to enroll in Brand Registry. Amazon requires a brand name or logo permanently affixed to the product or packaging and a pending or registered trademark from a government trademark office in a country with an Amazon store (checked October 24, 2026).
Where do I find private label manufacturers?
Most sellers start with manufacturer marketplaces such as Alibaba or 1688, trade shows and sourcing agents, then order samples from two or three suppliers before choosing one. Ask each for its minimum order quantity and whether it can change the product to your spec.
Can I sell private label products on Shopify or TikTok Shop?
Yes. The product and brand work the same way; only the demand signals change. Use Amazon best sellers to judge a category even if you plan to sell elsewhere, because they are the most visible public sales signal.
How much does it cost to start private label?
It depends on the product and minimum order, so there is no single figure. Budget for samples, the first order, packaging, a trademark filing, photos and launch advertising, and check that the price band leaves margin after Amazon's fees.
