What this calculator does

It turns a post's likes and comments, and optionally its views or reach, shares and saves, into engagement rates by followers and by views. Likes and comments are public on most posts, so you can check any account; shares, saves and reach come from Instagram Insights on your own account. Everything is calculated in your browser, so it is free and needs no account.

The two formulas

Engagement rate by followers

(likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100

The most common public formula. Leave shares and saves empty when you only see likes and comments, which is the case for other people's posts. With totals, interactions are first divided by the number of posts.

Engagement rate by views (or reach)

(likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ views × 100

How many people who saw the post reacted. Use it for Reels, which show views, or with reach from Insights for your own posts. It is less dependent on account size than the by-followers rate.

What is a good Instagram engagement rate?

We haven't measured Instagram accounts yet (as of October 18, 2026), so this page shows no Instagram benchmark rather than borrowing one. Two comparisons are fair: your own last 12 to 30 posts with the same formula, and three to five accounts in your niche with a similar follower count.

Why similar size matters: on TikTok, where we did measure, median likes ÷ followers across 12 brand accounts ran from 12.5% for an account with 40 followers to 0.052% for one with 577K (October 16, 2026). Rates by followers usually fall as accounts grow, so a 'good' rate for a small account looks very different from one for a large brand.

Analyze a whole Instagram account

Nolyn can read a public account's last 30 posts and report the engagement rate per post, the best and weakest posts and the posting rhythm, with the numbers behind each one. Edit the brief below if you like; it needs a free Nolyn account.

FAQ

How do you calculate engagement rate on Instagram?

Add a post's likes and comments (plus shares and saves if you can see them in Insights), divide by the account's followers and multiply by 100. For an account, do it for several recent posts and use the median or the average per post. If you have views or reach, divide by that instead to get the rate by views.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

It depends mostly on account size and niche, so compare with your own past posts and with accounts of similar size. We haven't published Instagram measurements yet; on TikTok, where we measured 12 brand accounts on October 16, 2026, likes ÷ followers ranged from 12.5% to 0.052% depending on size.

Followers or reach: which should I use?

Followers works for any public account, because likes, comments and follower counts are visible. Reach (or views for Reels) is more accurate for your own account, because it counts the people who actually saw the post, including non-followers.

Is this Instagram engagement calculator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no signup and sends nothing anywhere. Only the full account analysis, which fetches the posts for you, needs a free Nolyn account.

Why is my engagement rate so different from other calculators?

Calculators differ in what they count (likes and comments only, or shares and saves too), what they divide by (followers, reach or views) and how they combine several posts. Use the same formula when you compare; this page names the formula next to every result.
